In recognition of Disability Employment Awareness Month, the Chamber celebrates the vital work of leaders with disabilities from our member companies who have contributed to the strength, vitality, and growth of the Greater Philadelphia region. This year, we are excited to highlight Kate Carr, Marketing Director, Sports & Social, Live! Hospitality & Entertainment. Learn more about Kate as she shares her journey, accomplishments, and advice for the next generation of leaders with disabilities.
How has your identity helped shape you into the leader you are today?
At the age of 15, I had lost most of my central vision and was diagnosed as “Legally Blind”. I made the decision that while my vision is an essential part of me, it would not define me. As I’ve grown in my professional career, I’ve been incredibly lucky to work with amazing people who allowed me to work how I needed to, fostered my skills, and mentored my development. As a leader, I strive to show the same grace to my team.
What do you consider to be the biggest contribution you have made to your community as a leader?
My biggest contribution as a leader is cultivating talent and creating opportunities for everyone on my team. As I mentioned, I’ve worked with an amazing group of people who created opportunities for me and I hope to continue that tradition with my own teams.
What advice do you have for young professionals with disabilities who are looking to effect change in their community?
The world is conspiring in your favor, even when it doesn’t feel like it. With every experience, learn something and apply it to help get you where you want to be. The path to success is not straight, so take a deep breath and keep going.
How should non-disabled people support both those with visible and invisible disabilities?
No one is a mind reader! If you have a disabled team member, ask the best way to support them in their role. If you’re the disabled team member, speak up and share how you’d like to be supported from your team. Keep an open dialogue and have empathy towards each other.
