A message from the Chamber’s President & CEO Rob Wonderling to our community about the recent release of recommendations and actions from Recharge & Recover PHL.

Dear Friends,

One of my first jobs as a teen was as a busboy at the Hershey Hotel. The tips were good, but what I remember most were the leftover desserts I was allowed to take home.

I learned a lot from that opportunity. I learned to show up on time, communicate better, and, importantly, that hard work paid off.

For many young people, the introduction to the world of work can set the tone for the rest of their lives.

This summer, the Chamber is again partnering with WorkReady to provide opportunities for Philadelphia youth to gain the valuable work experiences they need to be successful both today and in the future. WorkReady offers young people the chance to work in many different career fields to develop the critical skills necessary to grow in an increasingly competitive economy.

Last summer, 27 Chamber member companies contributed nearly $950,000 as WorkReady partners, allowing more than 6,000 city youth to participate in paid work and work-related experiences. In a survey of WorkReady participants, 65%  said they were unemployed prior to joining the program, and 21 percent said it was their first job. This year, the Philadelphia Youth Network, which manages WorkReady, has set a goal to raise $1.5 million from the business community. I am confident that we can help beat that goal.

There are many ways to get involved. Companies can hire interns directly, bringing students into the workplace so they have an opportunity to see what they might one day be. Organizations can also opt to contribute financially, making it possible for another business that might lack the resources to host students.

The Chamber and its members play a critical role in preparing our region’s youth to be the workforce of tomorrow. Your commitment to these efforts is another tangible example of how our region is coming together to recharge, rebuild, and grow.
