Since 1949, the Chamber has annually recognized an individual for his/her professional accomplishments, improvement to the overall region, and commitment to charity and the community. The William Penn Award is the highest honor granted to a business executive in the Philadelphia region.

2018 Recipient: Amy Gutmann

This year’s William Penn Award recipient is Dr. Amy Gutmann, President of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Gutmann is the 8th president of the University of Pennsylvania and with her most recent contract extension, she will be the longest sitting president in the University’s history. Since her 2004 inauguration, Dr. Gutmann has focused on sustaining her vision, the Penn Compact, the pillars of which are Inclusion, Innovation, and Impact. Dr. Gutmann has played a major role in strengthening the Philadelphia community through a series of transformative initiatives, including the creation of an innovation ecosystem, which includes business incubator & laboratory Pennovation Works, the expansion of civic-minded partnerships with Philadelphia public schools, and the management of the University’s hospital system, a leading network in health care innovation and world class patient care.

Involvement

Dr. Gutmann’s other roles include serving as the Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Professor of Communication in the Annenberg School for Communication, with secondary faculty appointments in Philosophy in the School of Arts and Sciences and the Graduate School of Education. In 2019, she will publish her 17th book,  co-authored with Penn Professor Jonathan Moreno, Everyone Wants to Go To Heaven, But No One Wants to Die, which draws on lessons learned during her time as Chair of President Obama’s Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues.
