It’s happening all around you and it’s affecting workers and businesses. The nature of employment is evolving, and the workforce (people) and the structure of work (businesses) are rapidly changing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in April that there are now 2.84 million contract and temp workers in the U.S.—an all time high! The previous all time high of 2.657 million in August 2006 was surpassed in July of last year (orange line in the chart).

The number of temporary workers has steadily been on the rise since 2009, having dropped in the recession from the previous high in 2006 to low-point in August 2009, when there were only 1.75 million temps. This is off the charts low, when looking at the chart above. The continued increase since proves that a structural shift is occurring as the career system is quickly evolving.

Wondering what this means for you?

  • As workers (temps and non-temps), how can you adapt your career plan to keep up with the times?
  • As companies (employers), what can you do to set the appropriate hiring strategy based on the structural shift?

We have been studying this evolution over the last few years and would like to share how you (as a worker or an employer) can adapt to these changes. Our president at the Outside-In® Companies, Chris Burkhard will lead the discussion and answer your questions at our next talent seminar, which will be held at the Chamber on June 3rd. By taking a look at three age brackets that make up today’s workers, our seminar is relatable for anyone alive and working today.

Find out more information about the seminar on the Chamber website.
