In our efforts to help pass legislation for much-needed comprehensive transportation infrastructure funding across Pennsylvania, the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce (GPCC), the Allegheny Conference on Community Development (ACCD), and leadership of the GPCC submitted the letter below to all members of the PA House of Representatives:
Today, the leadership of the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce and Allegheny Conference on Community Development, along with the leadership of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, met to discuss joint public policy priorities. Chief among those is support for a state transportation funding plan. Therefore, these signatories urge you to support a comprehensive, adequate and sustainable state transportation funding plan.
We are closer than ever to agreement on a workable plan and new investment strategy. We applaud the extraordinary efforts of many Republicans and Democrats, business and labor leaders, House and Senate members, Governor Corbett and administration officials.
The Pennsylvania Senate passed Senate Bill 1, with a resounding bipartisan vote of 45 to 5. Now, it is up to you to advance this important measure.
We ask you to cast a vote in favor of a transportation funding package that will ensure the safety and efficiency of all elements of Pennsylvania’s mobility network; our roads, bridges, transit systems, rails, ports and airports. The Commonwealth’s growing $3.5 billion infrastructure funding deficit has triggered new weight restrictions on bridges and projected transit service reductions, deteriorating road conditions and increased congestion.
A strong transportation system is the lifeblood of a robust economy. The time is right for significant investment in the state’s transportation infrastructure to address decades of insufficient funding, maintenance backlogs and necessary capital improvements.
Action on this issue is the top priority for our organizations. Again, we urge your support for comprehensive, adequate and sustainable transportation funding to increase safety, relieve congestion, lower commuting costs, reduce pollution and improve commerce and mobility.
