The Chamber testified yesterday before the Pennsylvania House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee in support of SB 623, legislation that would set an annual goal of 5% participation by veteran-owned small businesses in all contracts awarded by Commonwealth purchasing agencies. Under SB 623, the Department of General Services would promote and assist veteran-owned small businesses in learning how to do business with the state and other large corporate entities. We commend the bill’s author, Senator Robert “Tommy” Tomlinson, for his leadership and for the overwhelming passage of this measure in the Senate.

GPCC has long supported efforts that recognize our veterans for their service and sacrifice to this country. Since 2005, our Chamber has proudly run an initiative called ‘Vetwork Your Business’. The program has provided Veteran-Owned Business (VOB) and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Business (SDVOB) vendors with comprehensive training to help them capitalize on their unique classification. It has created networking opportunities to connect with regional corporations and federal government agencies looking to satisfy supplier diversity goals.

The creation of an annual goal of 5% participation by certified veteran-owned businesses in all contracts awarded by Commonwealth purchasing agencies is one more way to show our thanks to the brave men and women who sacrificed in service to this country. Again, we commend Senator Tomlinson for his leadership on behalf of veterans and urge members of the Committee and the Pennsylvania House of Representatives to take swift action to advance SB 623 to the Governor’s desk.
