Breaking Barriers, Inc. (BB), a non-profit organization headquartered in Philadelphia, is dedicated to teaching youth leadership and self-discovery through the sport of rowing with the purpose of the advancement and achievement of urban youth. Ultimately BB seeks to reduce the number of youth on the streets and to channel their energy and enthusiasm in a positive and productive direction.
Founded in July 2005 by Dwayne H. Adams, BB operates in Philadelphia and Camden, NJ and plans to expand to other cities including Boston, New York City, and Washington D.C. Over the years, BB has added other programs including conditioning, nutrition, martial arts, and fencing and has received recognition on 6abc’s Action News and Vision.
In addition, BB’s founder, Mr. Adams, has received several awards for his work, including the 2008 NAACP Outstanding Citizen Award, the 2010 Humanitarian of the Year Award, and the Mayor’s Commission for People with Disabilities. Mr. Adams entered the sport of rowing after a tragic accident that left him without sight and went on to earn a bronze medal in the 2002 World Rowing Championship in Seville, Spain.
This program has been a great benefit to the youth who have participated. We are growing and continuing to move forward. Learn more about us and how you can help at our website, or call us at 267-979-7219.
