A nonprofit agency founded in 1977, Support Center for Child Advocates (Child Advocates) is the oldest and largest volunteer lawyer program in the country dedicated exclusively to children.  We recruit, train and support volunteer attorneys, teaming them with staff social workers to represent the legal and social service needs of children and to advance our mission to advocate for victims of child abuse and neglect in Philadelphia, with the goal of securing a permanent, nurturing environment for every child. During our last fiscal year, more than 330 volunteer lawyers provided pro bono services to a record-breaking 873 child clients.

Most child clients we serve have suffered from physical and sexual abuse or serious neglect. Cases are referred to us by the courts, the District Attorney’s Office, the Department of Human Services, hospitals, schools and private social-service agencies. For all children committed to our care, we work to ensure safety, health, education, family permanency and access to justice. Systemically, we promote collaborative, multi-disciplinary casework, and are local and national leaders in child welfare reform. For the community, we provide educational programs to increase awareness about the problems of and ways to prevent child abuse.

Our direct service staff is comprised of attorneys and masters-level social workers, all seasoned professionals with years of experience in the field and with the agency. Due to their efforts, we have become known both locally and nationally for high-quality, effective advocacy and systemic reform.

Through direct legal representation, fascilitation of all entitled social services, and impact in systematic change, Child Advocates has changed the story of thousands of children’s lives for the last 35 years.
