This past Monday, United States Secretary of Transportation, Ray LaHood, announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has released $745 million of funding that was awarded to two key projects on the Northeast Corridor (NEC) in May 2011! As you may know, this spring Secretary LaHood announced nearly $1 billion in awards for high speed intercity passenger rail for the Northeastern states, including $795 million for projects on the NEC.
The grant awards represent a major victory for the region’s passenger rail system and Monday’s announcement marks a major milestone in bringing the benefits of these improvements to the Northeast Corridor. The CEO Council for Growth will continue to advocate for the remainder of the funds to be obligated expeditiously so that we ensure significant progress toward improved speeds, convenience, safety, and reliability of rail infrastructure in the Northeast.
