The Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce has recently partnered with the Pennsylvania Coalition of Nurse Practitioners and the Pennsylvania Society of Physician Assistants in its support of the Pennsylvania Drug Card program.
The Pennsylvania Drug Card is a free statewide prescription assistance program that was created to help Pennsylvania residents afford their prescription medications. The program, along with the support of its community partners, has successfully educated thousands of Pennsylvania residents on their health care cost options. Since the program’s inception in 2008, it has saved millions of dollars in prescription costs.
According to recent surveys conducted by Rasmussen Reports and The Wall Street Journal, 40 percent of Americans have chosen not to fill a prescription because of costs, while 34 percent of Americans who have health insurance have not filled prescriptions because of costs. Additionally, in the second quarter of 2010, 50 percent of prescriptions requested at pharmacy counters have been abandoned due to costs.
In the current economy, the Pennsylvania Drug Card, along with its community partners including the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, the Pennsylvania Coalition of Nurse Practitioners and the Pennsylvania Society of Physician Assistants, recognizes the importance of making Pennsylvania residents aware of this free program. Everyone is eligible to get a free drug card, regardless of membership, income and age requirements. This program can also be used by individuals who have health insurance coverage with no prescription benefits and by those who do not qualify for publicly funded programs such as Medicaid and Medicare.
The program offers discounts of up to 75 percent on brand and generic medications with an average savings of 30 percent. The card is accepted at over 54,000 pharmacies across the country.
