The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is challenging the Greater Philadelphia region to join the movement to Stop Diabetes by participating in the 2010 Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes on Saturday, October 2. The walk, presented by Independence Blue Cross, is a one-day signature fundraising event that benefits the ADA and raises funds for diabetes research, advocacy and education. Gather your friends, family and colleagues to walk and raise money to help this important cause. Every dollar raised through Step Out plays an important role in changing the future for people living with diabetes.

The Philadelphia Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes is one of more than 150 ADA walks held across the country, and in fact, was the largest Step Out walk in the nation last year, raising more than $550,000. In 2009, nearly 120,000 Step Out participants nationwide raised more than $18.3 million in total to support the mission of the ADA: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of nearly 24 million children and adults in the United States who are affected by this disease.

The Step Out walk is the perfect opportunity for Philadelphia-area families, co-workers and friends to continue the momentum and raise awareness and money to fund vital research that will ultimately stop diabetes once and for all.  The walk begins at the Philadelphia Museum of Art with an energizing warm-up and opening ceremony.  This year’s 5K route will take walkers down scenic West River Drive and back to the art museum where walkers will enjoy finish-line family festivities, music and food.

Eleven percent of the population in this area has diabetes, a percentage well above the national average.  Nationally, an estimated 24 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, while an additional 5.7 million people are unaware that they have the disease.  If present trends continue, one in three Americans, and one in two minorities, born since the year 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime.  It is the fifth deadliest disease in America, killing more people than AIDS or breast cancer.  It is time for Philadelphians to take a stand and help stop diabetes together.
