On January 25, 2008, for the 14th year, Philadelphia area businesses welcomed ninth grade students from the School District of Philadelphia into their workplaces to give them firsthand exposure to the everyday working world for Shadowing Day 2008.
Three students from Overbrook High School came to the Chamber. It was a pleasure working with them and getting to know their interests. It was especially great to watch them learn about new opportunities they can pursue in the future. For instance, Philip, who spent the day in our communications department, expressed an interest in art. He got very excited when he visited our graphic design department and saw the practical application his passion could lead to in the future. All of the Overbrook kids were great guests, and I hope they had as much fun at the Chamber as we did hosting them!
Shadowing is an experience during which students are paired with employee hosts for a day to learn about their particular careers. Over 1,500 students and 140 businesses participated in this exciting educational opportunity. Shadowing Day serves as an opportunity for youth to experience the workplace and generates corporate interest in creating on-going work-based mentoring opportunities for youth.
