Summer Internships

Business Creating Opportunity for Youth

Would you like to change the life of a young person, improve the future of our region, and get help from individuals eager to work?

Then consider providing a paid internship this summer.

The Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce is encouraging all regional employers – from large corporations to small businesses – to provide a paid summer internship through the Summer Internships program. Learn how you can provide a paid internship here.

What is the Summer Internships program?

The Summer Internships program is part of a larger system of programs known as WorkReady Philadelphia, which is managed by the Philadelphia Youth Network (PYN). The Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, now in its eighth year supporting this initiative, partners with Mayor Michael Nutter and the City of Philadelphia, Philadelphia Academies, Inc., and United Way of Southeastern PA to encourage businesses throughout the Greater Philadelphia region to provide paid summer internships to youth in Philadelphia and Chester. The Chamber’s corporate partners in this initiative are TD Bank , America’s Most Convenient Bank ® and Pentec Health.

What does the internship consist of?

Each internship position costs the employer $1,700 and lasts for six weeks. Interns work at least 20 hours per week Monday through Thursday and attend professional development programs offsite on Fridays.

Internships are open to Philadelphia students who will enter 11th grade or higher in the fall. All students are pre-screened by PYN and are interviewed by the prospective employers.

What are the benefits of providing a summer internship?

Summer internships expose youth to a variety of careers and help spark their interest in higher education.

By providing a paid summer internship, your company will help shape our region by investing in its future workforce. You will also become part of a citywide effort that offers young people an all-important “first break” into the professional world.

In addition, your company will enjoy the benefits of providing a summer internship, which include the ability to showcase your social responsibility and improve productivity while enhancing your public image.

What support will my company receive?

Your company will receive ongoing support from PYN. Services that PYN will provide include:

  • Assistance in developing projects that will benefit your intern(s) and company
  • Training for your employees on working with youth
