Free Lecture Series Resumes at Harcum

The popular Harcum College Free Lecture Series resumes in September 2016 on the theme "The Science of Success." Experts representing a range of areas will offer a variety of strategies toward achieving more success in the professional and personal arenas. The lectures are free of charge and open to the public. Pre-registration is expected at All events will be held in the Strauss Family Rotunda of the Charles H. Trout Library on the Bryn Mawr Campus, 750 Montgomery Avenue, Bryn Mawr. A question-and-answer period and light refreshments will follow each presentation:

Harcum Receives International Award for Centennial Celebration

A year-long initiative at Harcum College in Bryn Mawr, which offered enrichment and community service to the greater Philadelphia area, has received international recognition for its efforts.

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), headquartered in Washington, D.C., named Harcum a bronze winner of a 2016 Circle of Excellence Award.

Harcum celebrated its Centennial in 2015 which included "100 Acts of Service," a juried art show "100 Years of Art, "a crowd-sourced fundraiser Bears & Squares, a free lecture series, and a fragrance collection.

"Harcum had very clear objectives and clear evidence of reaching the goals," CASE judges said. "Some events were things we had never seen before (like the signature scents). The events really aligned with the college's personality."

In 2016, more than 710 higher education institutions, independent schools, and nonprofits worldwide submitted more than 3,350 entries to CASE in nearly 100 categories.

Harcum College President Elected to Wall of Fame

Dr. Jon Jay DeTemple, President of Harcum College since 2007, was nominated and ratified by the Sidney Central School as an inductee of the SCSAA Wall of Fame for Distinguished Alumni and Educators at the Board's Annual meeting January 16, 2016. He will be inducted in Sidney, NY, on July 17.

DeTemple, a Sidney Central graduate, is now a dual inductee into both their Sports Hall of Fame and the Wall of Fame.

DeTemple received letters of support for his nomination including a community leader, Main Line Chamber President and CEO Bernard Dagenais, who said, "[Dr. DeTemple's] leadership emphasizes the strengths of diversity and the importance of community involvement in an effective way."

DeTemple received a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Syracuse University; an MBA from Syracuse University; and a bachelor’s of science from Cornell University. Under his leadership, Harcum College reached a record enrollment of 1,700 students.

Centennial Lecture Series: No Food Left Behind

Gary Oppenheimer, the founder of, a national initiative to help gardeners donate excess garden produce to neighborhood food pantries, will be giving a lecture on Monday, March 2, the second event in Harcum College’s Centennial Lectures Series. The presentation will be held at the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, 625 Montgomery Avenue, at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required

He will be discussing both the problems of food waste and hunger in America and the technology based solution. He will also explore the challenges faced by innovative solutions in the non-profit realm.

Aware of the increasing hunger problem in America as well as the staggering amount of wasted food in gardens around the country, Oppenheimer created enabling America's 42 million home gardeners who grow food to be able to easily find a local food pantry eager for their excess garden bounty.

Judy Wicks, Local Economy Pioneer, Speaking at Harcum College

Judy Wicks, founder of Philadelphia’s landmark White Dog Café renowned for its leadership in the local food movement and environmental stewardship, will present a lecture at Harcum College on Thursday, February 19, called "Building a New Economy: What's Love Got to Do with It?"

Wicks’ presentation will focus on the topics of local living economies, responsible business, and the role of the feminine in building a new economy. She will provide insight and inspiration concerning the deep connections between local food, ecology, economy, and social justice.

The lecture is from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Trout Library on the Bryn Mawr Campus of Harcum College, 750 Montgomery Avenue, and is free and open to the public; however, online registration is requested at Sales and a book signing of Wicks’ award-winning memoir Good Morning, Beautiful Business will follow.

Harcum College President Wins Ciervo Award

Dr. Jon Jay DeTemple, President of Harcum College, has won the 2015 Arthur V. Ciervo Award from CUPRAP (College and University Public Relations and Associated Professionals).

The Ciervo Award recognizes those outside of CUPRAP who exemplify the mission of advancing higher education.

DeTemple holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education and an MBA, both from Syracuse University and a bachelor’s from Cornell. He has more than 30 years of experience in higher education leadership.

Criteria leading to DeTemple’s selection included reaching a record enrollment of 1,700 students; increasing access to higher education in underserved areas within Greater Philadelphia in partnership with I-LEAD; strengthening the College's finances and physical plant including a $1.2 million renovation to the Trout Library, and capital improvements to the Cohen Dental Clinic and Veterinary Technology and MLT Labs.

DeTemple will receive his award at CUPRAP's Spring Conference on March 12 in Hershey.

Harcum College Turns 100 in 2015

Harcum College commemorates its 100th anniversary beginning in January 2015 with a host of special events throughout their centennial year. Harcum was founded in 1915 as a school for women.

“We've planned a meaningful celebration to showcase how we are unique within the higher education landscape,” said Dr. Jon Jay DeTemple, who has served as president of Harcum College since 2007. “The Greater Philadelphia community is invited to take part in many of the festivities.”

A free lecture series kicks off on February 19. In addition, 100 Acts of Service are slated throughout 2015 to benefit the wider Philadelphia community, a call for entries has been issued for a juried art show called 100 Years of Art, a community engagement art project called “Bears and Squares” is in the process of collecting entries, and a centennial gala is planned for October of 2015.
